750 copies of The Works of Adam Smith were produced in 1812 by Cadell & Davies, but 1,500 copies of The Theory of Moral Sentiments sheets were printed, the extra 750 making up the 11th edition, of which this is one. 106 in Tribe (2002). 2028 in Goldsmith–Kress Microfilm Collection.
Rebacked in maroon cloth, preserving the original boards and spine leather, new head and tail-bands.
Boards scuffed, board edges rubbed. Leaf edges marbled, but faded. Binding remains tight and square.
Sympathetic tissue repair to gutter at title page. ‘Splash’ tide mark to pp3/4 – 3 x 3.5cm.
Small hole (0.4cm) to pp17/18. Tide mark to foot of the gutter at pp330-336, 3x 2 cm
Placeholder discolouration at pp490-491, with placeholder preserved in new, plastic sleeve for illustrative purposes. Occasional spot of foxing and toning but Very Good overall.
Ex-libris Robert Pennyman Hull, E Coll. Aen: Nas: Oxon – i.e. of Brasenose College, Oxford University. The Reverend Robert Pennyman Hull (later, Brown) was the 1st son of Thomas Hull Brown, of Beverley, Yorks, a medical doctor. Hull matriculated 31 Jan 1833, aged 18 earned his B.A in 1836 (as Hull) and M.A. in 1848 (as Brown) which surname he assumed by royal license in 1848. Hull was perpetual curate: Buxton, co. Derby, 1842-57.
