Eliovson wrote 11 popular books on South African plants and gardening and was instrumental in founding the Johannesburg Botanic Society, of which she was the president for many years and which founded the Johannesburg Botanic Gardens.
The author, H.M.L. (Louisa) Bolus, was curator of the Bolus herbarium at the University of Cape Town from 1903-1955. She contributed a great deal to South African botanical taxonomy, naming over 1400 species. Her great uncle Harry Bolus, also a famous botanist, founded to herbarium in 1865.
With the author’s corrections, noting where the text contained in this volume was previously published on the title page, emendation in the author’s hand on the etymology of ‘Mesembryanthemum’ and some corrections of species names to plates on pp207 & 208.
Very good indeed, with some rubbing to the rear endpapers and a few unobtrusive marks to the card wraps.
