Single sheet, verso blank. Hand coloured map of the Covens and Mortimer edition of Guillaume de L’isle’s 1700 map of North America. A “foundation map” according to Tooley. The map is the first to depict California as a peninsula rather than an island.
This state not recorded in Tooley, with the date A.D. 1692 in the upper right cartouche under the scale of miles.. Old hand colouring, the borders of the continent with acidic ink which has burned through the paper in many parts, the whole of Nova Scotia detached and reattached from the verso with acid-free tape.
Good minus. Some loss in the North, tear from top of the centrefold through to where burn-through beings at the eastern shore of the Baffin Bay, about 12cm. Faint dampstain to lower left corner, small open tear to top right corner margin.
