Originally commissioned (only to be rejected) by Optima magazine, these photographs show the everyday lives of the residents of the whites only town of Boksburg, near Johannesburg, in late 1970s Apartheid South Africa. A country and a town heavily dependent on black labour, Goldblatt manages to capture piercingly subtle details in the everyday that show up the contradictions inherent in the system of white minority rule. Still in print nearly 50 years later, In Boksburg remains a core work of South African photography.
Full brown leather, gilt titles to top board and spine. Boards slightly splayed, spine corners bumped, else fine.
From the library of South African natural history book dealer, publisher and conservationist Russel Friedman.
