Dimensions: 35.5cm x 45cm
Single sheet, verso blank. Scarce woodblock map of Europe by Andre Thevet, showing Europe in remarkable detail, and the mythical island of Frislande in the West.
The charted area spans from Greenland in the West to the Black Sea in the East. The top of Africa, with Algiers, Tunis and the island of Malta in the South to the Northeast passage above Scandinavia in the North. Row boats, sailing ships and sea monsters are depicted in the oceans.
Thevet, a well-travelled Franciscan monk, produced this map for his Cosmographie Universelle published in Paris in 1575.
Very good indeed, unsophisticated but for a small repair to the centerfold at the top edge. Centerfold thinning in parts but not visible from the recto. Faint tide mark to verso. Very small ink blemish (<0.5cm) in the North-West.
